The Dignity in Action Day took place on Wednesday 1st February 2017, an exciting series of events took place across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, including Hinckley Hospital, Loughborough Hospital, Melton Hospital and Market Harborough Hospital.
This is an opportunity for health and social care workers as well as members of the public to promote people’s rights to dignity, and to give those receiving care a day to remember.
Aims of Dignity in Action Day is to make sure individuals who use care services are treated individually, given choice, control and in their daily lives are given a sense of purpose.
During the day, members of staff and the public spent time discussing ‘What dignity meant to them?’ and comments made which stood out included:
- “Respect”
- “Seeing me the person, not my illness”
- “Ensuring that I understand your answers to my questions”
- “Not to be rushed”
- “Being treated how you like to be treated yourself”
- “Made to feel relaxed, the personal touch”
- “Don’t treat me like a fool”
Staff members involved in various events were very positive about the day, and even commented that “It was really nice to be released from practice to spend valuable time speaking to patients and relatives”, and also “We got some great feedback about the care we provide for our patients”. Staff members also mentioned that individuals felt that ‘dignity’ is very important to them and others also highlighted that the dignity day was a great idea and like they had been listened to.
Overall, the day was a huge success and enjoyed by both staff members and the public who took part.
