The power of music and sport will be harnessed to promote health messages at a community event taking place in Leicester later this month.
A gospel choir, featuring some members with sickle cell disease, will perform at the free event being staged to spread messages about the condition along with mental health, type 2 diabetes and prostate cancer.
The Big Health Connect and Cultural Market Event, taking place at Moat Community College, in the city’s Maidstone Road, on Monday, October 22, between 9.30am and 5pm, will also feature a fashion show and sports sessions being run by Leicester City Football Club, Leicester Riders and Leicestershire County Cricket Club.
Other activities taking place will include reflexology, massages and games of dominoes, while a hot Caribbean lunch will be served to those arriving early.
There will also be a range of stalls including, Health Matters, which campaigns to improve wellbeing, while delegates will also be able to enjoy anarts exhibition.
The event is being supported by the Centre for BME Health, which is working to reduce ethnic health inequality in the region by sharing resources and promoting research.
The Centre is funded by the University of Leicester and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC) East Midlands.
Speakers will cover subjects including prostate cancer, sickle cell and mental health and visitors can also browse a variety of stalls.
Organiser Pamela Campbell-Morris said: “We invite everyone along to this free event to enjoy the activities and also learn about vital health information. This is all about promoting health, both in terms of knowledge, awareness and education at the same time as bringing people together to have fun at the same time.
“The event will also give us an opportunity to showcase what the centre is doing to reduce health inequalities in BME communities.”
