What is the project?
The ESRC Festival of Social Science (FoSS) is an annual celebration of the social sciences to promote awareness of UK social science research to new audiences. In 2023, the festival was held between 21 October to 17 November 2023, to celebrate 75years of the NHS. Led by University of Leicester academics, 12 events were held in Leicester to address some of the most vital issues facing society today, from health and wellbeing to crime, equality, education and identity.
As part of these celebrations, we successfully applied for funding to deliver two community events, Mast Khana, Swasth Khana (Eat Well, Eat Healthily), and Nacho Nacho (Dance Dance). Mast Khana, Swasth Khana took place on November 1st 2023, at The Belgrave Neighbourhood Centre, with over 90 people in attendance.

What is the aim?
The aim of the event was to promote healthier eating around celebration times. The day was organised to include health information stalls, alongside a presentation from Jessica Mhesuria, Senior Dietician from the NHS, who shared educational videos on healthy eating habits and lifestyles.

What were the outputs
A day of educational activities, alongside a hand illustrated artwork to evaluate the day. Artist, Paul Barrand, attended the event and spoke with participants and collected feedback from them on the day. He produced the artwork shown which was later taken to community groups to feedback to them.
